Traffic stop leads to chase

On January 19, 2020 around 2am, Troopers from PSP attempted to conduct a traffic stop at the intersection of Hazle Twp, Blvd. and 28th St. on a 2002 GMC Denali.

The vehicle did not stop and led troopers on a pursuit through Hazle Twp.

The vehicle went over an embankment into a 3 foot deep creek and became submerged in ice and mud and was disabled. All 3 occupants inside the vehicle ran from the scene and led the Troopers on a 2 hr search.

All occupants were found hiding along the embankment near the creek.

Troopers seized brass knuckles, a small amount of marijuana and a clear plastic bag containing a crystal like substance of suspected methamphetamine along with related drug paraphernalia.

The operator of the vehicle, Joseph Mitchell, 25 yrs. old of Hazleton, was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude officers, DUI: controlled substance, possession of illegal drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia along with multiple summary violations. Mitchell was arraigned by Judge Dotzel and was given $20,000 unsecured bail.

Ryan Berger, 30 yrs. old of West Hazleton was one of the vehicle occupants. He was charged with prohibited offensive weapon.

The other vehicle occupant, Ann Granatie, 37 yrs. old of Hazle Township, was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The vehicle was later towed from the scene.
