Four City Businesses Shut Down
Four Businesses shut down and four families homeless. That was the
outcome on Wyoming Street in the city after Code Enforcement officers
condemned a building. It’s all thanks to the owners lack of attention to
problems with the property. News 13 was there as PPL workers cut power
to this building at the corner of Wyoming and Hemlock. Code Enforcement
officers say power, sewage and structural violations were not corrected
by the owner despite the constant warnings over the past several months.
Left with no choice, the building was condemned and residents of the
second floor apartments were forced to evacuate along with the owners of
a grocery store, barber shop, luggage store and a tailor. All were
notified last Wednesday and had until Monday to leave. It’s now up to
the owner of that building to take action so everyone can move back in.
Code Officer, Maryann Thomas says that the owner of the building is from out of state and will
now receive fines on a daily basis. No word on where the residents are
now staying and if the businesses were relocated.
