A New Heart…A New Start for Kayla Kelly

If you don’t believe in miracles…you just might after this story…
The Teenager who has become News 13’s friend and a face of courage and
bravery for the entire Community is a TRUE miracle…
Today, Wednesday, February 1st 2012, was the first day of the rest of 19
year old Kayla Kelly’s life…
News 13 has been following her journey for a new heart…
Since Kayla was just a little girl, she battled Uhl’s disease…its very
very rare…she is just one of only two people in the world with the
disease…
Everyday was a battle for Kayla, but through it all she always had a
smile on her face…
Once the community learned about Kayla, the support was
overwhelming…from fundraisers galore, to prayers and folks sporting
the color red in Kayla’s honor…
She became a household name as EVERYONE hoped she would get the gift she
so desperately needed…a New heart…
And News 13 is so happy to say SHE DID!
Word came Tuesday night that there was a heart for Kayla…and from
there, everything transpired so quickly at Hershey Medical Center where
Kayla had been for 5 weeks waiting for some good news…
By 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Kayla was in the operating Room…
25 family members strong held hands, cried tears of joy and kept their
fingers crossed…
Kayla’s new heart arrived by medical helicopter and by about 10 o’clock
Wednesday morning, Kayla’s new heart was beating inside of her…
By early Wednesday afternoon, Kayla was already trying to breath on her
own and communicate with her mom and dad…
For the first time, Kayla’s Mom saw a normal heart beat coming from her
daughter’s heart monitor Wednesday afternoon…
Kayla continues to recover from her heart transplant and is making a
miraculous recovery already, but she does have a long road ahead.
If you would like to send Kayla well wishes you can do so on the Letters
to Kayla Facebook page…
She DOES read the messages and her mom says they keep her smiling and
strong…
And finally, in order for Kayla to receive this gift of life, a life was
lost…please keep the family of the heart donor in your thoughts and
prayers as well…That person was a hero…just like Kayla is for never
giving up and continuing to fight through it…
Best wishes from all of us here at News 13 SSPTV to Kayla and her family…
What a great way to start National Heart Month, with a new heart for a
fantastic girl.
