To add to Kristen’s story – Ive been around the dog that the story is based around and had no problems with it. In my opinion, and its only my opinion, ANY animal, the human animal included, can cause damage to an individual, or another animal. The pit is an animal stereotyped because of its reputation. Up the street from me, a girl owns a pit and has the dog trained so well, Id say its better trained than most police dogs and definitely listens better than most kids. Personal experience: years ago, at the age of 5, my son, now 19, was attacked by a neighbors husky. My son had puncture wounds INSIDE his mouth, as well as to his face, and to this day, because of the dog attack, is still scarred physically and emotionally, but loves dogs. The neighbor, who was ordered to keep the dog in a dark basement for 10 days, ignored the order and had the audacity to get angry after the dog was removed from the house, received fines for going against the order, not having the dog current with shots (it was 9 months overdue for shots) and other related fines. Had it not been for his sister being there, the situation couldve been much worse. To blame the dog just because of its breed, isnt fair to the dog. Even though the dog is considered a ‘family member’, keep in mind that it is still an animal. For instance, what happened to Roy Horn, of Siegfried & Roy. These guys raise, handle and train tigers from the time the cats are babies. Did they want to have all tigers put down because of this incident? No, they did not. As Penn Jillette, of Penn & Teller, said about the incident, “Every living thing goes crazy, Every species.” And keep in mind, this animal was also on a leash at the time of the attack. I do agree with Mrs Nahay about something she said. All dogs should be on a leash and the owner of the animal should be responsible and train or have the animal trained. If your pet is considered ‘one of the family’ or ‘one of the kids’, whether it be at home or obedient school, try and do the right thing for you and your ‘family member’.
