It marks the first day or the start of the season of Lent….which
begins 40 days prior to Easter. Ash Wednesday was being celebrated all
over the area today. News 13 stopped by St. Gabriel Church for the
afternoon service where local members were receiving their ashes in the
sign of the cross on their foreheads.
The ashes used to mark people’s foreheads are actually ashes from burnt
palms used last year for Palm Sunday. This ash is mixed with oil to form
ash paste. Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by
observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual
discipline. Easter Sunday which is April 8th.
